The National Source Protection Pilot Project centres on a high degree of public involvement, for example through school visits, community meetings and door-to-door visits. Through its new primary school curriculum and an adult water management course, the project aims to instil in the public stakeholders, a positive attitude towards their freshwater environments, to make them feel like they can make a difference and encourage change. When it comes to water protection and conservation, public awareness and education are proving to be of vital importance.

The National Centre for Freshwater Studies (NCFS) at Dundalk Institute of Technology aims to develop new knowledge through research and to provide a scientific basis to support the development of strategies and technologies to protect and restore surface water and ground water impacted by man-made and natural processes. The NCFS, along with the National Federation of Group Water Schemes (NFGWS), is the lead collaborator in the National Source Protection Pilot Project at Churchill and Oram, which is NDP funded project.
